Overview of UmaxTool 1.0:
------------------------
UmaxTool 1.0 provides the following services via buttons or menu items:
1. Ability to delete the desktop database.
Deleting the desktop database (specifically, the "Desktop DB" and
"Desktop DF" files) is recommended if the Finder is behaving unexpectedly
(displaying the wrong icons, etc.) or following a system freeze or crash.
When you delete the Desktop Database, the following series of events will
occur:
• The Finder will be shut down. This is because the File Manager
does not allow an open file to be deleted, and the Finder almost
always has the desktop database open.
• If File Sharing is running, it, too, is shut down (having File
Sharing operational without the Finder running is a bad idea).
• The Desktop Database file(s) are deleted.
• If the Finder does not automatically restart, then you must
manually quit all other active applications -- including UmaxTool
1.0. When no applications are left running, the Finder will
restart and the desktop databases of all active volumes will be
rebuilt.
2. Ability to delete the "AppleShare PDS" file.
After deletion, all volume access privileges will have been lost.
Deleting the AppleShare PDS file is recommended if you experiencing
unpredictable and/or unreliable networking behavior. The AppleShare PDS
file is an invisible file which will be automatically rebuilt by the
system when necessary. Deleting this file is harmless, even if it is
deleted even when no networking anomalies have been observed.
3. Ability to zap the low and/or extended parameter RAM.
Zapping the PRAM is recommended when your Mac is behaving strangely in
the hardware arena (not recognizing a newly installed or relocated video
card or SCSI device, not recognizing all memory, freezing at start-up,
etc.). Persistent system settings, such as double-click speed, key repeat
rate, mouse speed, etc., will be lost, and you will need to reset them via
various Control Panels. UmaxTool 1.0 allows you delete just the low PRAM
or all 256 bytes (the extended PRAM).
4. Ability to make visible files invisible (via the File menu).
5. Ability to make invisible files visible (via the File menu).
